![]() I’m wondering if anyone at Apple, when testing the pencil with Word, ever actually tried using it in a real word academic environment. The only way to have the pencil work as advertised is to erase all annotations and have a clean document. One other observation, if I heavily annotate the word doc, then save it, shut everything down, reboot the Ipad, and then open the annotated document up, the latency issue is there at first stroke of the pencil. BTW, I’ve tried lecturing with and without being connected to the network. I hope I’m wrong about this and there exists a simple fix for this issue on my end. My knowledge of computers is limited, but it seems to me that the Ipad doesn’t have enough power to process text/jpg MS word documents when using the pencil for extensive annotations. I use Photoshop a lot and it reminds me of someone trying to use Photoshop on a computer that is underpowered for the Photoshop program, with significant lag times between the execution of the function with the mouse and when it appears on the screen. We have the same effect using a finger to erase or write. After a couple of pages writing with the pencil, the file size will increase by a couple of Mb’s. I’ve also noticed that the annotations increase the file size significantly. If I have to erase all of the markings on the page, the program will freeze, sometimes 5-10 seconds as the Ipad processes the erase task. I’ll write an entire word, nothing happens on the screen, then the whole word appears. If you have the Apple Pencil and nothing here fixes the problem. Wait for the pairing prompt and tap Pair. After a page or two of lecturing, things go south quickly, latency gets worse. To re-pair your Pencil, plug it back into the iPad. When we first start the lecture, annotating and drawing diagrams typical for lecture with the pencil, everything works as advertised, no latency in the pencil function. Lecture notes in MS word are a mix of texts and jpg's so the documents can run from 4-8 Mb in size. For some reason there was a block and he could not even begin. Please look at the iPad’s Bluetooth settings and check it out. So a big reason for your Apple pencil not working is that it is unpaired from your iPad. Pairing problems are nothing new in the 21st century. I have several other colleagues who are trying the same thing with their Ipad Pros and we all have the same issues. If your Apple Pencil does not appear, wait for some time, so it charges up a little, and then looks for it again. ![]() I’m a professor and I’ve been trying to use my Ipad Pro and MS Word for lecturing.
